What was different about Saunteel Jenkins' mayoral announcement
A non-profit leader and former city council president during the emergency takeover, Jenkins becomes second major candidate to formerly announce a bid for mayor.
Non-profit CEO Saunteel Jenkins launched her campaign for mayor Tuesday at a community center in the northwest side neighborhood she grew up in.
She stressed the need for experience, pulling from her time on council during the city’s bankruptcy and work in the neighborhoods as a non-profit leader. Jenkins told the audience of about a hundred people Tuesday her campaign is about creating a city where dreams are nurtured and neighborhoods are safe and thriving.
“Detroit is at a crossroads — the next mayor will determine the trajectory of the city,” Jenkins said. “Many people talk the talk, we need a mayor who has walked the walk. I have walked that walk.”
